In Styria, situated in the south-eastof Austria, there is a long and rich tradition of pilgrimage. Mariazell, in the Northern part of Styria, is the most important and famous pilgrimage site of the area. It is the church where people have been praying St. Mary, the Magna Mater Austriae, for the last 800 years. Apart from this main place of pilgrimage there are a lot of long distance paths, some of them also dedicated to a saint. In the region of Styria you find pilgrimage paths for St. Hemma, Saint Benedict, and, as in the entirety of Europe, there are pilgrimage paths dedicated to St. Jakob.

For this route we have chosen the branch that, starting from Graz and going to the South of Styria, meets Frauenberg, a cultural place dating back to pre-roman times, and continuing towards Slovenia. After having crossed the border this path reaches Carinthia.

The itinerary starts in Wildon, situated about 20 km south of Graz, easily reachable by train or car and even by bike, driving along a cycle route – the Murradweg. In the area, a Jacobus church is situated along with some ancient traces of population in Styria. The route passes through Lebring and Leibnitz (with another Jacobus Church) and Frauenberg. Here there is another sanctuary and also the traces of a pre-Roman temple dedicated to the goddess Isis.

The route continues uphill next to the border of Slovenia in Ehrenhausen, a picturesque small town, where another Jacobus church stands. This brings the visitor to the entrance of one of the most famous tourist destinations of Styria, the South Styrian Wine area.
